Juzcar, Smurf Village, El Pueblo Pitufo

Upon arriving in Spain, my Husband and I wanted to visit a place that we've never been. We thought about Cordoba, but I wanted something smaller, more intimate, more secluded and quaint, so my mother-in-law (from Malaga) suggested Juzcar, the smurf village. At first I thought she was joking, there cant be a smurf village, in SPAIN of all places I thought... but low and behold, there was.

We drove from the Costa Del Sol through the mountains, on our way to Ronda, on a long winding road (very dangerous might I add), but with the most gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea and mountains, we even saw Africa in the distance. We drove around lunch time and stopped in an adorable mountain restaurant-- secluded, with fresh food, a fireplace, and friendly spanish wait staff. Twenty minutes later, through the SerranĂa de Ronda, we were there.

In Juzcar, el pueblo pitufo!

Everything was blue. It was so trippy, but adorable, exactly what we wanted to see!

Afterward we researched and found out that the Smurf 3D film premiered there, and they painted all the houses blue for the occasion. The idea was to paint them back to white immediately after, but the towns people decided to keep it Blue. It put them on the map.

This was such a memorable experience! I mean, really, who has ever been to a REAL smurf village before? But just to let you know, if you're thinking of visiting, besides being a smurf village, theres not much else to do while there...

Malaga, Spain

One of the most charming, yet gritty places I've ever been.

Living a Double Life

I recently returned from a long trip to Spain, the same town I lived in for two years and the same town that my husband is from.

I’ve been there many times, but this time I really felt like I had built a community of family and friends. We went out everyday with our friends and family. I knew and greeted the people who worked in the cafes and the shops who I saw almost everyday while I lived there. I knew the streets like the back of my hand, and I visited family who welcomed me with open arms, and hugged me super tight.

It’s so strange to live two different lives, but its kind of cool. When I’m there, I’m a  free spirit and happy, I don’t have many responsibilities, I go with the flow, I’m not necessarily a leader, I do what everyone does- go to the beach, eat, drink, and sleep. There’s not much more than that (besides running and boogie boarding). I’m pretty adaptable there. In NYC, I’m super busy and individual. I do my own thing, write in my journal, go to boot camp classes, I’m a professional with SO MANY responsibilities, sitting on two board of Directors, I run a youth program, and I consult. I’m a leader in NYC and I hardly have time to enjoy and relax.

Because these two lives are so different, I’m constantly missing one or the other and I cant seem to find a way to have the both that satisfies me. What can I do about this?

This last trip has shown me that I need to make some changes. I need to simplify my NY life and I need to get to Spain more. Now I have to map it all out…

Alhaurin de la Torre

Alhaurin de la Torre, with los montes de Malaga atras
We are spending our first few days with my in-laws in their small mountain village by the sea, Alhaurin de la Torre. This is where my husband and I first met, we were working in the same school, and we just knew from the moment we first saw each other, that we would be together. Who would have imagined that four years later we would be back visiting, a married couple... sigh...

Everything I see in this town has great memories, and the scenery is so amazing.

Tomorrow we move on to Nerja, one of the most brilliantly perfect places I've seen in all my life.

traveling through Europe

Its 5am in Dublin. We are waiting for our connecting flight to Malaga. We feel our eyelids getting heavy and we are acting so silly (signs of exhaustion), but it doesn't matter because we are in IRELAND, my third home outside of the USA, and soon we'll be in my fourth home, SPAIN!

I love airports, the energy in the air is so vibrant-- its full of new beginnings, family histories, international culture, shops, various smells, its just fabulous!

Valentines Day-- in Transit to Europe

I cant think of a more perfect way to spend my Valentines day then in an airport with my husband, waiting to catch a flight to Europe, sipping on a glass of wine.

Life is good.
